Who Are the Delhi Capitals?
The Delhi Capitals are one of the first eight teams to play in the Indian Premier League. They have been playing in this tournament since the inaugural edition in 2008 but they were known by the name Delhi Daredevils back then.
But GMR group sold 50% stake in the franchise to JSW Sports in 2018 and the team was subsequently rebranded as the Delhi Capitals in that year.
Even though the Capitals are yet to win any Indian Premier League title, they have a large fanbase. That’s majorly because the franchise’s roots are in the capital city of the country. The Capitals have had a number of anthems and theme songs over the years.
The current theme song is “Roar Machaa” sung by Amit Trivedi. It became an instant hit and they have had a couple of other popular theme songs as well, like the “Dil Dilli hai, ab Dhadkega” in 2018 and “Dhuandaar Dilli” in 2016.
The IPL History of the Delhi Capitals
The Capitals (known as the Daredevils then) was one of the strongest teams in the first five years of the IPL. They made it to the playoffs thrice between 2008 and 2012. However, they lost their way after that and turned out to be one of the worst performing teams.
The period between 2013 and 2017 was a very disappointing time for the fans as Delhi finished in the bottom half of the table consistently. But their fortunes changed again once JSW Sports joined hands with the GMR Group in 2018.
Since the merger, the Capitals have again become one of the strongest sides in the league. Even though they haven’t won the title yet, they were the runners-up in 2020 and also made it to the playoffs in 2019 and 2021.
The Capitals have assembled a strong core of young Indian players over the last few years and the reason behind their consistency and success of late can be attributed to their performances and development into even better players with time.
Who Holds the Delhi Capitals Records?
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant holds the record for the most runs scored by a Capitals batter in the history of the Indian Premier League. Pant has amassed 2686 runs in the league at an excellent average of 35.34 and strike-rate of 147.90.
Shreyas Iyer, who leads the Kolkata Knight Riders currently, is second in the list of most runs scored for the Capitals with 2375 runs to his name whereas legendary India batter Virender Sehwag and Shikhar Dhawan are third and fourth in the list with 2174 and 2066 runs to their names respectively.
Pant also has the record for the highest individual score by a Capitals’ batter to his name. He played a magnificent knock of an unbeaten 128 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018.
As far as the wicket-taking charts go, former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra leads the way with 106 wickets in 99 matches. There are mostly pacers in the list after him with Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel sitting at second and third respectively with 76 and 45 wickets to their names respectively.
Mishra also holds the record for the best bowling figures by a Capitals bowler. He registered superb figures of 5/17 against the Deccan Chargers in 2008.
