Who Are the Gujarat Titans?
Gujarat Titans made their Indian Premier League debut in 2022 as one of the two newly added franchises along with the eight that already existed before. CVC Capital Partners, a British private equity and investment advisory firm, won the bid for the Titans for an amount of INR 5625 crore (US$740 million). After that, the owners roped in a star-studded administrative and support staff consisting of former England batter Vikram Solanki as Director of Cricket, former India pacer Ashish Nehra as head coach and former South Africa batter Gary Kirsten as batting coach and mentor. They also roped in Aashish Kapoor as spin bowling coach and talent scout, Mithun Manhas as fielding coach and Narender Negi as assistant coach.
How was the Gujarat Titans squad assembled?
After the BCCI announced the Gujarat Titans as one of the two new franchises, they were allowed to pick a maximum of three players through a draft system and then fill the remainder of the squad in the mega auctions. In the draft, the Titans picked former Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their captain for INR 15 crore while Rashid Khan (INR 15 crore) and Shubman Gill (INR 8 crore) were the two other picks. In the mega auctions, the Titans picked up 20 more players to build their squad for their maiden voyage in the IPL. They bought eight uncapped players for INR 18.7 crores and 12 capped players for INR 33.15 crores in the auctions. Among them, Lockie Ferguson was the highest paid player as he got a contract worth INR 10 crores. Rahul Tewatia was the next in the list of most expensive players bought by the Titans as he was picked up for INR 9 crores.
